Councils in Dorset have joined forces against junk mail. "Although recycling junk mail is better than binning it, the best option is not receiving it in the first place."
The councils advise people to cut back on junk mail in four steps. Residents are encouraged to:
- register with the Mailing Preference Service;
- put a 'No Junk Mail' sticker on their letterbox;
- opt out of being listed on the 'edited version' of the Electoral Register; and
- always tick opt-out boxes that can prevent their name is added to junk mail lists.
A spokesman for Dorset County Council said: "Although recycling junk mail is better than binning it, the best option is not receiving it in the first place.
"West Dorset District and Dorset County Council staff are running a series of waste reduction road shows in the town, where residents will be able to fill in a Mailing Preference Service registration form, and pick up a free waste reduction pack and local reuse directory, packed with information on how to reduce and reuse household waste."
