Your Choice Dummy Scheme
Diary of a junk mail campaigner
The Direct Marketing Association loves snail mail – but they have now finally started sending opt-out forms for the Your Choice Dummy Scheme via e-mail.
The Direct Marketing Association has started advertising the existence of its opt-out for unaddressed junk mail again. Perhaps it's because the junk mail lobby has committed itself to raising the 'awareness' of the scheme to 30% by the end of 2014.
The Direct Marketing Association has removed all information about the Your Choice Preference Service from its website. They've also hidden the page about the opt-out scheme on the website of the Mailing Preference Service. It seems that the dummy opt-out scheme still exists though…
Dr Junk Buster
Do you know how to stop charity bags and menu's for takeaways being posted through the letterbox please?
I have several No Junk Mail signs (hand-written and ready-made) on my letter box, and while the amount of junk has reduced, I still get tons of takeaway menus and flyers from local business. How do I find out who's distributing them? I don't mean the guys actually delivering them because they usually don't even speak English, but the companies who employ them. I want them to train their staff to respect people's wishes.
Guide to stamping out junk mail
The 'Your Choice Preference Scheme for Unaddressed Mail' is supposed to help householders reduce unaddressed junk mail delivered by distribution companies that are members of the Direct Marketing Association (DMA). That sounds complicated, and it is.

A new opt-out website for unaddressed junk mail that was to be launched three months ago has been built. However, a Freedom of Information request has learned the website is unlikely to go live any time soon.
A new deal between the Government and junk mail industry will introduce a wide range of measures to help people cut back on junk mail. Amongst others, the industry will finally introduce an online 'one-point-stop' for opting out of receiving unsolicited mail.
The Direct Marketing Association is to introduce its own one-point-stop for registering with junk mail opt-out schemes. In the process the Mailing Preference Service may become an opt-in / opt-out scheme.
Opt-out schemes for unaddressed junk mail are failing and should be replaced by a straightforward sticker system, according to Stop Junk Mail.
